About Arbor Orthopedics
Orthopedic surgery is the part of medicine that involves the bones, muscles and joints. Our practice is limited to surgery for arthritis of the hip and knee. Most of our patients have had arthritis for a long time. Their primary care doctors have tried non-surgical treatments such as medications, injections or modification of activities. We see patients whose problems are severe and who have not done well with non-surgical treatments.
About Dr. Carn
The training to become an orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacements is long and very intense.
Dr. Carn received his Bachelor’s degree, first in his class, in chemical engineering from the University of Utah. A Master’s degree was obtained in chemical engineering from UC Berkeley. He worked for a year as an engineer before beginning medical school at the University of Utah.
Orthopedic residency training after medical school is five years. This was completed at the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1984. An additional year of special training in total joint replacements was completed with an internationally well-know orthopedic surgeon, Lawrence D. Dorr, a surgeon in Los Angeles.
A total of 16 years of school and training beyond high school was required to achieve the skills and training necessary to have the credentials and experience to perform hip and knee replacement surgery.
Dr. Carn’s practice has centered on total hip and total knee replacement surgery and has done over 5,000 hip and knee replacements. He is a founding member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and is a board certified orthopedic surgeon.
Dr. Carn also uses his engineering skill as the president of SunMedica®, Incorporated; a Redding company employing seven people. He has six patents and many additional ideas in the pipeline.
The Office
The office is managed by Marliese. She also is Dr. Carn’s medical assistant and schedules the surgeries. Marliese has many years experience in managing an office and as a medical assistant performing primary patient care. She is excellent at helping the patients with many details prior to the surgery.
Gina is the front office person. She is great with the patients, answers the phone and most importantly she schedules appointments and tests for the patients. She is very skilled at her job, very pleasant and friendly and comes from a family of healthcare workers.
Brett is a full licensed x-ray technician. He is thoughtful and gentle with the patients when he performs their x-rays. He knows many specialty x-rays that are unique to evaluating worn out joints. We have new, state-of-the-art, x-ray equipment for him to use. It is important for our patients to realize that some of the x-ray views that we use to evaluate our patients are unique and not views generally taken at other x-ray facilities.
Rebecca works behind the scenes with the details of the charts and helps Marliese with the immense piles of paperwork. She helps to keep the office and the charts organized in this very complex era of paperwork. Rebecca helps on a part-time basis as she is a full-time owner and operator of a coffee specialty shop.
Total Hip
The hip is a ball and socket joint. A hip replacement resurfaces the joint by substituting the socket with a new metal and plastic surface and by replacing the worn out ball with a new metal ball fit together and result in a new smooth, very low friction ball and socket joint.
Total Knee
Knee replacement is better described as a resurfacing surgery. This could be equated to putting new lining on the brakes of your car as opposed to throwing the brakes away and putting new brakes in its place.
